While on a walk the other day in Brunswick, Tracy and I had the opportunity to meet Kevin and Britney Bongang. They were painting the playground at the Boys and Girls Club in Brunswick, making it into a very beautiful colorful mural. We stopped and took the time to talk to them and get to know them. We found out that Kevin is in fact a professional artist that paints murals and has done so throughout the country. You can see his work on his website https://www.bongang.com/ . And we learned that Kevin has done other murals here in Brunswick.
After meeting Kevin and Britney, I looked into the murals that I had seen around Brunswick while we were exploring the town. I learned that in 2019, Brunswick started a program called “Community of Hope”. This project was developed anticipating that art would help heal and build community in Brunswick. This project was funded by donations and businesses owners can donate their buildings to be painted.
On the “Community of Hope” website I found a list of murals that have been completed to this point throughout Brunswick. I took the opportunity to explore Brunswick on my bicycle one day while Tracy was working and photograph many of these murals. As I reflected on the meaning of the project “Hope”, I thought this was a wonderful way to help the community grow.
If you ever have a chance to come to Brunswick, Georgia take the time to explore this lovely historic town and enjoy the work of these mural artists for yourself. You can find the location of all the murals listed on the “Community of Hope” website: https://glynnvisualarts.org/brunswick-mural-project
